Video Review: Castlevania: Harmony of Despair PDF Print E-mail

This video review is a co-project between Patrick Cassin and Tyler Zehner.

Castlevania: Harmony of Despair is now available for the Xbox LIVE Arcade. But is it a return to its classic 2D glory, or is it merely a shadow of its former self? For the answer, check out the video review below, and let us know what you thought of the game by leaving a comment below.

This is a good and fair review. I enjoy the game, but the randomness and the progression is VERY tedious.

One thing I wanted to mention, is you consistently said you couldn't zoom in close enough. In the video, you never zoomed in closer than 2x. In the video options, you can set your camera to toggle up to 3x and I think that'd satisfy you. The characters are much larger in that mode, but the drawback is you can't always tell where you're going. This is why I like to cycle the camera to zoom out when I need to get a castle view, then zoom back in for the actual playing.

I can't speak for the co-op, because I cannot find a good group to play with. Certain characters are favored over others and if you aren't what is considered "good", you get kicked off before a game starts.

That being said, if any TAGers want to get a group together, PM me, I would love to play this game with people who aren't d-bags.

even in 3x view, the screen still includes parts of the stage above, below and around you that have nothing to do with the room you're in. if the 3x view had gone in just a little bit closer and cropped that out so it looked and felt like an older Castlevania title, I think it would have done more to bring fans into this new HD era. but with the camera just slightly pulled back, when you use Alucard for example, you definitely notice going back and forth between this game and SOTN that Alucard is much smaller in this game and, consequently, moves through the world at what seems like a distinctly slower pace. it's really annoying if you've played lots of these titles before. was I the only one who had that experience?

No, everything seems to move slowly. I was really hoping to get some sort of power ups for Alucard and Soma to let them move faster, but there doesn't seem to be.
