At GDC this week, Crytek showed off the first real-time footage of their new CryENGINE 3, a new engine designed with a console focus that'll allow the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 to play first person shooters with a substantial increase in graphical bells and whistles.
The engine is being shown to GDC attendees and while a full list of games using the engine hasn't been announced yet, we're eager to see who's on board with this new engine. Although, at the same time, we were hoping for something with a little more pizazz. It's certainly no PC engine, but we're not complaining too much. It's still pretty.
FarCry 2 just keeps looking better and better, doesn't it? Showcased at the Paris event today and taken from the most current build of the game, this new in-game tech demo for "GTA Africa" really shows what the Dunia Game Engine is capable of on both the PC, as wel as home consoles.
Real time dynamic shadows, fully simulated 24 hour day to night cycles, super realistsic fire propagation (who doesn't want to light up an entire grassland with a flamethrower?) and all the technical jargon you could want. Impressive, most impressive.
Last month, Eden Games released the first tech demo for the upcoming Alone in the Dark, which received nearly infinite positive responses. Part 2 is here now, and I have to say, despite Atari's fate in the gaming industry, it looks like they will be raising the bar for survival horror titles with the release of this game. Showcased in the following video is the use of objects as weapons, and how the analog stick is utililzed to move your equipped item through 3D space. I take it there will some tricky puzzles that will require this feature.
First aid spray, something that Resident Evil relies on, is being ratcheted up a notch. Now you will have to decide to heal yourself, or use the sparse spray as a makeshift flamethrower. As well, the game's excellent looking fire effects are detailed a bit more, showing that not only does the element light the game world realistically, but things that catch fire degrade after a few seconds. Alone in the Dark ships this Spring.
Atari and Eden Games' upcoming Alone in the Dark has been receiving lots of mixed reactions. At first glace, almost everyone says that it looks fantastic...and that's about it, where's the gameplay? Eden Games has responded with a developer diary-style tech demo walkthrough of the game, and it looks amazing, to say the least.
Much like the original demo video for BioShock, the narrator focuses on highlighting how the environment interacts with the world, the many uses for items, and the combining of them into deadly (and even clever) weapons, the way light plays its role in the game, and more. The "I'm stoked" meter for this game just went to 11 for me. Alone in the Dark is set to ship this Spring.
Eidos and Funcom released this video showing the various graphical abilities of the engine developed for Age Of Conan. This is a PC only demo and does not indicate if this will transfer to the Xbox 360 version.
