As May 5 draws closer, so does our opportunity to play the third piece of DLC for Fallout 3, entitled Broken Steel.
In our never-ending quest for information, we decided to pester Bethesda for the dirty details. And luckily for us, Jeff Gardiner, lead producer on Fallout 3, was kind enough to give us his time once again. Apparently, he enjoys answering questions about streaking through caves with the Iron Giant. He also gives us a few details about the new perks associated with Broken Steel, as well as Fawkes' beef with Bill Gates.
Hit the jump, and you just might learn something. After all, knowledge is power.
This interview was a joint effort between Larry Marcum and Patrick Cassin, with additional contributions from Jay Van Beveren.
First off, what more can you tell us about Broken Steel's storyline?
JG: We’re keeping the storyline under wraps – but it will let players continue on past the conclusion of the main quest we shipped with Fallout 3. While the Enclave have been weakened, they are far from dead and the Brotherhood of Steel wish to execute the killing blow.
Because you are being pressed into continued service with the Brotherhood, what sort of moral choices will players now face?
JG: Again, not to spoil the storyline, but just because you work for a faction doesn’t necessarily mean you have their best interests at heart.
Why require players to finish the main story to access this piece of DLC? Why not set it up via radio transmission again?
JG: Despite having to finish the main quest in order to access the storyline of Broken Steel (it would make no sense if you didn’t!) you can still access almost all of the new weaponry, armor, enemies, 10 new levels, and all of the perks that come with it from a fresh save if you so desire.
How will old quests and random encounters stand up to level 30 characters? We're looking forward to streaking through the Deathclaw Sanctuary with impunity.
JG: The power ramp from 20 to 30 is steep. It will take a while to get there but the player will be able to really specialize and ‘max out’ a lot of skills and attributes should they choose. Despite this tougher creatures will appear in areas of the wasteland (including dungeons) that are not directly affected by the main quest.
Will we encounter any new enemies while wandering the general Wastes, or just new super-soldiers restricted to Broken Steel areas?
JG: Yes, new enemies will be wandering the wastes. These include not only high-end Enclave soldier but new Ghouls, Supermutants and even a new Radscorpion.
Other than the Tesla Cannon, what new weapons can we wield? Can we add the Hellfire Trooper's napalm throwers to our inventory?
JG: Yes, the new Heavy Incinerator is available for all of your barbequing needs. There’s also a Tri-Beam Laser, which is the equivalent of a laser shotgun.
Is that Liberty Prime we saw in some of the new screenshots? Will the Iron Giant of the Capital Wasteland be making a return?
JG: Well, he was still standing at the end of the first game, so he wouldn’t suddenly disappear! I don’t think the Brotherhood of Steel would let their best weapon lie dormant for too long….
Are the new perks going to be quest rewards, or will they be earned by further leveling up your character?
JG: The new perks in Broken Steel are only available from leveling up from 21 to 30.
Did you bring Fawkes as backup when you asked Microsoft if you could break the achievement barrier?
JG: Fawkes did help a lot with that. You should’ve seen him headlock Bill Gates.
Now that your trilogy of DLC has come to a close, what future plans are there for Fallout 3?
JG: Not talking about future plans right now. We’re excited to get Broken Steel out for folks.
