Infinity Ward controversy continues as Activision announces new direction for Call of Duty [Update] PDF Print E-mail

Today, we seem to have much more solid information about insanity that has been occurring at Infinity Ward.  Today, in a press statement issued by Activision, the company confirmed that Jason West and Vince Zampella were no longer with Infinity Ward and that chief Technology officer Steve Pearce and head of production Steve Ackrich are leading Infinity Ward on an interim basis.

While we still do not have confirmation on the reasons for the departure of Jason West and Vince Zampella, it seems that it might have to do with the major announcement that Activision made just moments ago regarding a new direction for the Call of Duty franchise.  Activision confirmed what most of us had suspected, that Treyarch would be releasing a new Call of Duty game this fall.  It also confirmed that Infinity Ward would still be producing map packs for Modern Warfare 2 this year.

The big change, however, is the announcement that Sledghammer Games, a studio owned by Activision and headed by Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey (both of whom, it should be noted, worked on a senior level on the original Dead Space), were going to be producing a new Call of Duty game in 2011.  The game is announced to be a game in the “action-adventure genre”.  While it has been rumored for some time that a new company would work on Call of Duty, this confirmation could give us some idea as to why West and Zampella are no longer at Infinity Ward.

Kotaku is reporting that an anonymous source familiar with the studio is claiming that IW has “long bristled at the notion of any studio other than IW making a Call of Duty game.”  Tensions between IW and Treyarch have flared up in public on occasions, so it doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility that the idea of a new company working on the franchise would anger West and Zampella.

Moreover, it has been long rumored that IW wished to make a new franchise or a game set in the future.  According to Kotaku’s source, Activision skirted the idea, which could also be a cause for the flare up.

Understand, though, information is still sketchy to say the least.  If this is true, however, it could have a massive impact on the series as a whole.

Update: As this story was being posted, G4's Patrick Klepek (who, as a side, has been doing a fantastic job covering the IW mess) reported that an internal Activision memo is claiming that Infinity Ward will still be "central" to the Call of Duty Franchise

Activision Publishing Reveals New Plans for Call of Duty(R) Franchise

The company expects to release a new Call of Duty game from Treyarch this fall. In addition, Infinity Ward is in development on the first two downloadable map packs for Modern Warfare(R) 2 for release in 2010.

The company is also for the first time announcing that a new game in the Call of Duty series is expected to be released in 2011 and that Sledgehammer Games, a newly formed, wholly owned studio, is in development on a Call of Duty game that will extend the franchise into the action-adventure genre. Sledgehammer is helmed by industry veterans Glen A. Schofield and Michael Condrey. Prior to joining Activision Publishing, Schofield was the Executive Producer of the award-winning game, Dead Space and Michael Condrey was the Sr. Development Director on the game. The Dead Space franchise has won more than 80 industry awards worldwide including the prestigious A.I.A.S. Action Game of the Year and two B.A.F.T.A.S.

The Call of Duty business unit will be led by Philip Earl, who currently runs Activision Publishing's Asia Pacific region and previously served in senior executive positions with Procter & Gamble and Nestle. Activision Publishing veterans Steve Pearce, chief technology officer and Steve Ackrich, head of production, will lead Infinity Ward on an interim basis. Jason West and Vince Zampella are no longer with Infinity Ward.

Lastly, Activision Publishing announced that the company is in discussions with a select number of partners to bring the franchise to Asia, one of the fastest growing regions for online multiplayer games in the world.

Wow. An action-adventure Call of Duty game? I can't imagine a non-fps CoD game, because to me the defining characteristics of the series are good shooting mechanics and great multiplayer.

So Activision thinks this is a good idea, but a futuristic IW CoD game isn't? You would think that after Modern Warfare 2 made 17 billion dollars, Activision would have a little faith in them...
