Something massive is going down at Infinity Ward; studio head ousted PDF Print E-mail

It’s been a fairly strange few days for the gaming world.  With a hefty chunk of PS3’s unable to play games due to an internal clock error, I took that to be the high point for video game news this week.  I was clearly wrong.

Last evening, reports began coming in from sources through G4’s Patrick Klepek that a group of “bouncer-types” had shown up at the offices of Infinity Ward, one of the two main companies handling the Call of Duty franchise for publisher Activision.  Initial reports said that these people, when asked what their business was at the studio, refused to answer.

To add to the mess, studio heads, Jason West and Vince Zampella had been missing all day since a meeting with Activision.  Sources had described the mood between Activision and Infinity Ward as “tense” recently.

Soon, however, some of the pieces began to fall into place.  It was confirmed through Kotaku, as well as through NeoGAF, that Jason West’s Facebook status was listed as “Jason West is drinking.  Also, no longer employed.”  To add to the mess, the usually extremely talkative community manager for Infinity Ward, Robert Bowling, said, through his twitter, “I should also say, while I appreciate all the calls, tweets, messages and hearing my ringtone a lot. They're in vain - as I have no info.”

As of this moment, what we do know is that Activision filed an SEC report earlier today, claiming that the company was investigating two “senior employees” at the studio:
The Company is concluding an internal human resources inquiry into breaches of contract and insubordination by two senior employees at Infinity Ward. This matter is expected to involve the departure of key personnel and litigation. At present, the Company does not expect this matter to have a material impact on the Company.
At the moment, 1UP is reporting that a source from inside Infinity Ward is claiming that Activision is. “‘flexing their muscles’ against the studio, which is attempting to ‘push back against change.’” It seems that Jason West is, in all likelihood, one of the two, and it seems just as likely that the other is Vince Zampella, though at the moment we cannot confirm this.

We will, of course, keep you informed as more information becomes available on this massive story.

We all knew Activision would eventually ruin the franchise, the same way they ruined the guitar hero franchise. Hopefully the creative talent at I.W. moves on to a new studio and develop something new and special.

it all boils down to $$$ either IW wasn't getting what they think they deserved and/or Activision was pressuring IW into doing something they didn't want to do so that Activision could make more $$$

I wouldn't be surprised at all if this is 100% Activision's fault. Remember, Bobby Kotick wanted to charge you a kidney to buy MW2.

After spending a few minutes reading ALL the posts, I have to wonder this: Why is everyone CONVICED that Bobby is the bad guy? I'm no fan of his but there's more to this story then $$$. I don't think the IW guys are pure as the wind driven snow here.

I might just be pulling this out of my ass, but hasn't IW made it clear in the past that they would like to move away from the Call of Duty franchise? I can't imagine Activision or that prick Bobby Kotick being ok with the developers of the most successful game in their history not wanting to make another one. Maybe IW wanted to go in a new direction with a brand new IP and let's be honest, would it be that surprising to find out that Activision was out there bringing the hammer down on new ideas?

I think the fsct that mw2 has no dlc yet, the fact they wana move away from COD, the fact the fact Mw2 is losing players everyday because of the glitches, the fact every time they patch mw2 there's a new glitch, and a unconfirmed fact the bobby Kotick is the origami killer.
so yeah idk how i feel about this because i mean good if its because they can't get there shit together but bad if it's because IW wants to move on because last time they tried something new we got cod 4 so yeah. either way i feel bad 4 the guy

It's pretty well documented that IW wanted to make a modern military shooter prior to COD2, but Activision wanted them to continue making WW2 shooters. They negotiated with Activision and we got COD2 and eventually COD4.

Looking at the kinds of choices Activision has made with their franchises. Guitar Hero being a prime example... Harmonix after GH2, wanted to make a game with a complete band, Activision wanted them to continue pumping out guitar only games. Harmonix walked and developed Rockband, that same year Guitar Hero 3 (best selling game of that franchise) and only embraced the idea of a full band game after they saw the kind of success and critical acclaim RockBand recieved. Since then, Activision has pretty much crapped out non-stop shovelware titles bearing the Guitar Hero logo. So much so they flooded the market with garbage, and as a result closed Red Octane and Neversoft.

Activision hasn't made a "game" since Pitfall, since then they're pretty much bean counters that rape and pillage everything they touch.
