Hit the jump for today’s awards.
Best Remake
Winner: The ICO and Shadow of the Colossus Collection
Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are considered by many to be two of the best games of all time, so it’s easy to understand why this collection was our Best Remake of 2011. While the original games were gorgeous, these HD upgrades made them run substantially smoother than their PS2 counterparts. Aside from a beautiful graphical upgrade, however, it’s clear that Sony knows how much fans adore these games. From the fascinating bonus features on the disc to the ability to easily change the games box art, there is a reverence for these games that has rarely been seen in any HD upgrade. - Addam Kearney
Runners Up:
Beyond Good and Evil
Metal Gear Solid HD Collection
Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
Best Looking Game
Winner: The Witcher 2
Console games are doing their best to make great looking games these days but if you want truly beautiful games, the PC is where it’s at. No other PC game better defines the idea of “Best Looking” than The Witcher 2. Not only does it have gorgeous visuals, even on modest hardware, but the actual design of the world is a sight to behold. Whether it’s a castle being sieged, a lush forest or a dank crypt, everywhere you go is unique and beautiful. This beauty extends to the various people you interact with and the creatures you dispose of. Many games yearn to create a believable world but few games ever reach such levels as The Witcher 2. - Kyle Orr
Runners Up:
El Shaddai- Ascension of the Metatron
Rayman Origins
Battlefield 3
Best Download Only Game
Winner: Bastion
As the industry has taken and run with the idea of downloadable content, download-only games have become increasingly polished and intricate. Bastion has a great art style, a great soundtrack and really shows some innovation in the use of the context-sensitive narration. Add to that the fact that it is an action-rpg with solid combat; a fact which alone puts it above several other disc-based titles released this year by much larger studios. It is a game that has a style all its own, with characters and a story you actually feel immersed in. In fact, if it weren’t for the game coming in at only around six hours of play time, I’d expect Bastion to be selling on a disc right now. - Patrick Cassin
Runners Up:
Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet
Infamous: Festival of Blood
Ms. Splosion Man
Best Game No One Played
Winner: Rayman Origins
Platformers used to be the bread and butter of the gaming industry. While that title has shifted to shooters in this generation, platforming games can still provide some of the most fun experiences around. Rayman Origins is a prime example of such with great visuals, classic gameplay and wonderful co-op. Rayman is pure joy to play, with cunning level design and reflex-testing challenges. It also plays great in couch co-op, a mode that is being made more and more obsolete lately. If you are, or ever were, a fan of platformers you owe it to yourself to pick this game up. - Kyle Orr
Runners Up:
Shadows of the Damned
Warhammmer 40k: Space Marine
The Gunstringer
