Reply from my State Rep. about SOPA
January 20, 2012
Dear Mr. Kistoo:
Thank you for contacting me to express your concerns about H.R. 3261, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). I appreciate hearing from you about this important issue and welcome the opportunity to respond.
I believe that SOPA in its current form is unworkable. The internet has been a vital tool for innovation, creativity and economic growth for individuals and communities. I believe that it is critical we put in place an online regulatory framework that ensures the relationship between online consumers and industry is fair and equitable -- all the while ensuring we do not unintentionally stifle the ingenuity and openness that has enabled the internet and online commerce to thrive. However, online piracy is a real problem and internet commerce should not be a mechanism for abusive business practices, violations of individual privacy rights or copyright infringement. To that end, I strongly believe intellectual property and privacy laws should apply to all forms of commerce.
H.R. 3261 would authorize the Department of Justice or a copyright or trademark holder to seek a court order blocking a rogue site committing or facilitating online piracy. It would also require online service providers, Internet search engines, payment network providers and Internet advertising services to carry out certain preventative measures including withholding services or blocking access to infringing sites. In particular, I believe the legislation, as written, is overly broad and could place unintended limits on free speech and threaten legitimate web sites. As this legislation proceeds, it will be critical that we settle on a policy that strikes the right balance between the protection of online intellectual property and the promotion of an open and free internet. SOPA has been referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary. Although I do not serve on this committee, I will be sure to keep your views in mind should the full House of Representatives consider H.R. 3261 or other relevant legislation.
Again, I appreciate hearing from you. Please do not hesitate to contact me about other issues of concern to you in the future.
Sincerely, John Sarbanes Member of Congress

Moments of Weakness
It's been over a month since I sold my Xbox360 and just became a one console gamer with gaming only on the PS3. For the most part, I've been going strong and sticking to my decision but my bad timing lead to some weakness. It would have been a better time if Sony didn't get hacked and the PSN was down for most of the time. I had Socom 4 right when it went down so I couldn't play it online which I was really looking forward to. I got tired of waiting and just sent it back to Gamefly. Also, I couldn't watch netflix streaming on the PS3 because to do so, you have to log into your PSN account but I couldn't. Also, it would have been better if there weren't deals every week for the xbox360 with included gift cards. I will admit that I had moments of weakness that I honestly thought about picking up a xbox and going back on the reasons why I sold it in the first place. I was making up reasons in my head of why I should get another one and that it would be ok if I did. But I was strong and I have resisted it and I'm still just gaming on the PS3. I'm glad that the PSN is back up, I also picked up L.A. Noire and I am really enjoying it so that is helping me keep my mind off of buying a 360. The only thing that I would kinda make me go back and pick up a Xbox360 is if the rumors and speculations are true that there is a price drop coming around E3. Maybe, just maybe.

Switching to Just One Console
By the title of the blog post, you can probably tell what I’m writing about but, I’ll give a little background before jumping in. Since both the PS3 and Xbox 360 have been out at the same time, I’ve been fortunate enough to have both consoles. I’m not big on having all the respective exclusives and don’t participate in fanboy console wars but I did always feel like having the two major consoles was justified for my gaming habits. *A quick aside, I do have a Nintendo Wii but I don’t count that since it only gets played and ever got played when my GF comes over and wants to challenge me in Mario Kart. Alright, enough of that and on to the topic at hand that involves me…(Insert dramatic pause), getting rid of my Xbox360. That’s right; the one console that I’ve gone down to only having is the PS3. My decision came down to looking at the release calendar for the rest of year, looking at most of my gaming time was being spent on the PS3 and that I’m a person that if something is sitting around for too long not being used, I get rid of it. In this case, that happened to be my 120gb Elite Xbox360. First, all the games that I was planning on getting this year where coming out on both systems or just on the PS3. Those for now being Mortal Kombat, L.A. Noire, MLB ’11 The Show, Battlefield 3, and Uncharted 3. Second, I was doing the majority of my gaming on the PS3 since I’ve been playing a lot of MLB 11’ and most of my friends that I play online with and talk about gaming with, only have PS3’s. Also, it will be 2012 next year and that means the 360 will be coming up on 7 years of console cycle, so I figured that by then we should be hearing about a new Microsoft console. It’s been about two weeks now since I sold the Xbox360 on Ebay and I have no regrets so far. I’m still happy with just having the PS3 and being a gamer.

Not WithOut Irony
On the 20th of April, for my last blog post I wrote about switching to just one console and that console was the PS3 over the Xbox360. I talked about buying more games for the PS3, playing it more online and that I had even already sold my Xbox online. I felt good making my decision before and after the blog post but just a couple days later after the post, I tried to play Socom4 and Mortal Kombat online and could not. By then the news hit and it later came out that the PSn was hacked, taken down and is to this day of me writing this, is still not up. I started to chalk it up to just bad luck, bad timing, and just realized that in life, some Ironic shit will happen to you and all you can really do is laugh. So, that’s what I did and just played the single player parts of the games I just picked up. I even still picked up Portal 2 for the PS3 this past weekend when it was on sale. What I didn’t do was hop on Twitter and join the Sony apologist party or go on a ‘140 character’ mad rampage or run out and buy an Xbox360. I didn’t do anything other than check my credit info, change some passwords and made sure my identity was safe for the time being. The one thing I will take away from this whole experience of Sony being hacked is that I do feel a little more apprehensive of a video game digital marketplace. Not so much that I wouldn’t buy anything and support it, but more of me having my credit card info stored on an online store. I will still buy DLC or games but for a while I will just buy point cards from stores and use those.

My PAX Adventures in Pics
Me playing some XBLA game that I didn't remember the title of, sucked at it, and got a button for losing.
Some Food from Boston:
...and some pics from the show floor.
Couple things I learned from being at PAX: 1. I truly do hate being in crowds 2. A lot of Nerds or Enthusiasts don't shower or practice personal hygiene. 3. Boston is a really cool town. 4. My girlfriend is becoming a gamer. (Most Important)
