My blog posts

Thursday, March 18 2010 Giving up cable tv...

I've been a loyal Time Warner customer for years. Mostly because I don't want to go satellite and have n0 other choice. So maybe customer is the wrong choice of word, PRISONER maybe more fitting. But with recent innovations out there, I really think the times have changed enough that I can get 99% of my media via set top boxes and computer programs either to my lap top or to my TV.

This very thought scares the hell out my kids. I have 11 and 12 year old kids but am single. My son says to me tonight," How am I going to watch Chuck?". Its a house hold favorite(this 3rd season, is its best we think). I quickly booted up our 360 and went to my PLAY NOW and used it to go to HULU. I showed him that not only was there this weeks CHUCK but 7 others from this season! Now it wasn't in 1080 but I thought it was decent enough. We also have Netflix and as we all know the 360 and NetFlix are a match made in heaven.

In my living room we have a 42 inch 1080 Toshiba and a 360, plus a desk top PC. My bedroom I have a 32 inch Phillips 720 and my PS3 and my laptop. This all combined with the fact that most of my shows, I'm finding, are available online, and we can get them from any of these new services. Net Flix for tons of movies, tons of tv shows(past and present). Plus Play On for HULU and other sites. I'm really thinking about freeing up nearly 100 bucks a month and saying kiss my arse to Time Warner cable. I'll still keep my Road Runner Turbo though. I can't do any of this without it. So I think Saturday morning I'll be marching into TW office and Saying," here you go" and handing over my set top box

Has anyone else done this? Let me know. I think Parris mentioned he was thinking about it on a past episode of Uncle Gamer(I hope I'm not getting podcasts mixed up). Ditch cable maybe a new motto...

UPDATE 9/26/09 After playing the demo for Brutal Legend I can honestly say that I hate this game now and will never be purchasing it. After driving around in circles trying to kill some sort of hell snake I just turned it off and deleted it from my hd.  To the games credit though it was beautiful (if you like that sort of art style).

Ok Let me start off by saying I love Tim Shaefer. So many great games! Here's my first problem with Brutal Legend. I absolutely hate jack Black. I simply can't watch or listen to anything with him in it. I hate his movies, I couldn't watch Kung Fu Panda(shame because I love Dreamworks animated movies)  and I hate Tenacious D. He's nails on a chalk board to me. I know he is talented and that alot of people enjoy him but for some reason I just can't.The first time I learned about Brutal Legend it was in a issue of Game Informer a long while ago. The pages blew me away. If it was available the next day I would have been there when the doors opened. Then it was dropped my activision, then came the legal battles and its been a few years. Over time it seems the more I see of this game the less I want it?!?! Mr Black(to his credit) has been everywhere, I mean everywhere pimping this game. I've passively learned more about Brutal Legend than any other game coming out. And with each new Game trailer, X-play, Ign story the more weary I am. This game comes out on October 13! Its not getting pushed back. Its going to be in the heat of battle with other A, B and C  titles. I fear for the fate of Double Fine.

Ok heres my second con about this game. I hate Heavy Metal. Not all metal but Brutal Legend seems to draw its strength from the darker reaches of the genre. Here are the first 12 bands listed in the games credits

A Serpentine Crave" Bishop of Hexen
"Ad Notics" Rotting Christ
"Am I Evil?" Diamond Head
"Angel Witch" Angel Witch
"Angels Don't Kill" Children of Bodom
"Assault Attack" Michael Schenker Group
"Back at the Funny Farm" Motörhead
"Battle Angels" Sanctuary
"Battle Hymn" Judas Priest
"Believer" Ozzy Osbourne
"Betrayal" Lita Ford
"Birth of the Hero" Tvangeste

Seriously this soundtrack and general feeling for the game seems really, really dark. Rotting Christ, Angel Witch, Children of Bodom. These may be bands that Tim Shaefer loves(d) but Mr Shaefer isn't making this game just for himself. I really feel that this splinters would be fans from buying this game much the same way not liking 50 cent prevents someone from buying Blood in The Sand regardless of how well the game is made. Brutal Legend needs to sell! If it doesn't it will be harder if not impossible to get a Psychonauts 2or other new I.P.s. And lets face it with so many game companies going under its not hard to believe that one bad game could sink Double Fine.

It really looks like the only way I'm going to be getting Brutal Legend is by buying it used way, way down the road, when its 1/2-1/3 the price, if at all. Its a shame because I love its developers, and was really really looking forward to this game coming out. There is just too much holding me back from purchasing this day or week one.

I Thought they were joking...Ps3 motion controller

I was really psyched for E3, for some things more than others. I set my dvr to record all the press conferences. I waited all day at work on that Monday and Tuesday, raced home, got my dinner ready and sat down on the couch. I fast forwarded the bullshit pre show crap from G4 and then it began, the Microsoft conference. Yada, yada yada same old, same old. Yeah I was excited to see Mass Effect and the other cool stuff they showed but we all knew that stuff was coming.

Then something new, Project Natal! This wasn't the wii, this IS whats next. Microsoft said why try to catch up in this race? They actually might have been able to if they merely cut and pasted Nintendos success. But no, the 360 has a great install base for the time being. They actually looked ahead and said we're moving forward! What they showed in content may not have been earth shattering but it did innovate and will move the industry forward. I can see where this may take gaming. I was left amazed.

Then Tuesday came, I followed the same ritual as the day prior. Now personally I think Jack Trenton is a major bore. He is no showman by any means, but I was watching to see what Sony had, not Mr. Trenton. So then we come to the part of the show when the motion controller came out. Two guys with dollar store, snow cone looking toys in their hands came on stage. This may have been fine if this was E3 2006 or 2007. But this is 2009 YOUR COMPANY IS GETTING IT'S ASS KICKED and you come out with this garbage. Again this may have ben acceptable if at the end of this presentation they said,"And this is available in store today!" But umm no, no street date, no real games, no name, nothing! Just some stupid toys that did'nt even work! I expected them at the end to start lauging and show the real presentation but they were serious. 3 years after the Wii, one day after Project Natal was introduced. Some Sony employee(s) making probably 6 figures  came up with this crap and some other A-Holes at Sony decided with the gaming world watching that this was what we wanted to see or what we needed?!?!?!?

Sony you deserve all the lay-offs, all the negative press, all the crap that your company is now resting in!
