Wednesday, April 14 2010 Splinter Cell Conviction Review

Quick note, I'm not a writer. I have average writing skills, though for what ever reason, I like to write. I had a few extra minutes on my hands and decided to write this review so that I can start practicing on my skills, for no reason really.

So grammar Nazis beware, heres my review.

I've been a fan of Splinter Cell for since it launched last gen. The stealth based gameplay was something that was new and fresh. Hiding in cardboard boxes was the past, hanging upside down from a pipe as you slit your enemies throat was the future. That was eight years ago, now Ubisoft Montreal is back, hoping to reinvent the genre again.

Lets get this out of the way, Conviction is a monumental change from Sam Fishers past adventures. Terrorists are back, Michael Ironside is back and, aside from a few gameplay elements, that's about it. While that may sound like a failure to many diehard fans, the game industry is an evolve or die environment. No longer is stealth a slow paced stroll through the dark, but an adrenaline pumping, over the top, ass kicking thrill ride. The shadows are now your friend, not your home.

Sam Fisher, no longer part of Third Echelon after the death of his daughter and best friend/boss, has nothing holding him back. He is now judge, jury, and executioner, he answers to no one. Fisher is just one pissed off father looking to avenge his daughter. Searching for the murderer is just the beginning of Fishers outing, the ride is filled with twists and turns, flashbacks and flash forwards. This Splinter Cell has the best story of the series, while that may not sound amazing since its predecessors were anything but story driven, it is worthy of summer blockbuster status.

The gameplay is mostly split into two different sections, there's your average sneak around and kill everything living half, and the interrogation half. The few interrogation scenes are Ubisofts solution to seam cutscenes and gameplay. Basically there are a few scripted events where you find someone who refuses to give you some much needed information, Sam's way around this is to bash, smash, cut, and stab them with an American flag. The player can drag the enemy around while the two characters interact, then when he stops talking simply press B and watch the ass kicking commence. While fun to watch on the first playthrough, they are basically unskippable annoyances on later go-arounds, and you start to wonder why, after just giving away info because they were stabbed by a flag, they become so hesitant to answer your next question.

The "sneaking" half is now less about never being seen because you went past a room unseen, and more about never being seen because you just murdered everything in the building, and a few people next-door. This is made easier because of the tons of guns, grenades, and gadgets you posses. Also available to make your killing spree easier is "Mark and Execute". Get an up-close and personal stealth kill, and you earn the right to mark multiple people with the right bumper, and hit the "Y" button and watch the bodies hit the floor. Throw in a great cover system and you've got an amazing action game.

I've just covered the Single player, there are also multiple one-on-one multiplayer modes to enjoy, along with a co-op mode that rivals the single player campaign.  So while many people will miss the hiding in shadows days, we have to get used to the new Sam Fisher he's here to stay and be pissed off at the world.

Friday, July 17 2009 Wait, dont we hate this guy?

It's very odd to see Mr.Thompson being sane, hell he seems to be a great guy.

Things like G4 have made Jack seem like he's out of his mind, I know he has said dumb things in the past, but this video really makes me have  a little  respect for the guy.

...but he did call games murder sims....

Anyway, it's a very interesting video.

Thursday, March 12 2009 It's fun to play with yourself!

I'm tired of this mindset that a game without multiplayer isnt worth the $60. Whenever I read a post saying that they won't be buying a game like Bioshock because there is no deathmatch, I die a little on the inside.

Give me a single player game over any multiplayer game. Give me a great story, atmospher that will suck me in, and a script that is oscar worthy, not The Darkness multiplayer.

The thing that set me off today is this: http://kotaku.com/5168756/capcom-confirms-prices-versus-mode-for-resident-evil-5

RE5 is my most hyped game of the year, I've been a RE fan almost all of my life. Now they want to charge an extra 400 point's for something that 1. really has no need to exist and 2. should be free.

But who cares if it should be free right? IT'S MULTIPLAYER! That fact that this thing will sell makes me sad. If this sells well for what I'm sure will be a slapped on deathmatch, then what will stop developers with good online from charging us?

First off, let me just say I'am not a fanboy of any system, I have all three, I'm just a gamer. I play games to have fun, nit because they are on certain system.

No that I have said that, Resistance 1 and 2 are average. I don't get the love for this game. To me PS3 only owners needed a game to justify their purchase so they made Resistance out to be amazing.

But the odd thing is the fact that I have bought and sold both games, and odds are I will get the third. I really don't understand why. I can not find fun in these games, and like a said my only goal when playning a game is to have fun. When I play the Resistance games I always find myself rushing through hopeing to find an orgy of fun right around the next corner.

I expected epic boss battles, I got a giant throwing me from point A to point B without a real fight.

I thought Iwould fight smart enemies, I get ones that like to stand out in the open and shoot.

I expected a real challenge, I get 20 cheap deaths from invisible one-hit-kill preadetor ripoffs.

But most of all I exxpected a great story, but I got one as generic as they come, I didn't like the story until the final cutscene.

Who knows, I might just be crazy, but the fact that Sony's chose to throw this against Gears 2 makes me laugh. If you ask me, they needed to delay this and get a few more months of development, but some polish here, some fun there and gave us Killzone 2 for the holidays.

Please, I would love to hear other peoples opinions on this, it could be that I'm crazy.

The one good thing to come out of this is the 30 bucks gamestop gave me that I put towards FEAR 2 and Killzone 2.

But anyway, this is just a 17 year old gamers rant.
